The Cambridge Public Health Department recommends avoiding raw pet food (and raw milk) as it can cause illness to not only pets, but the people around them. See tips for preventing bird flu in pets

Salmonella and Listeria can make pets sick. Infected pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. The FDA recommends that if your pet has consumed any of these recalled products and has these symptoms, to contact your veterinarian.

There is also a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Children, pregnant people (Listeria can cause pregnancy complications like miscarriages), and older people are especially at risk to certain strains of Salmonella and Listeria.

The FDA recommends that people infected with Salmonella or Listeria should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Rarely, Salmonella and Listeria can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. People exhibiting these symptoms after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
