What We Do
In our truly unique partnership, the CPHD HEAL team collaborates with Cambridge Public Schools (CPS) Food and Nutrition Services to serve up healthy school meals.
International Flavors Program
Each year we work on many projects together, but the International Flavors program is certainly the tastiest! With help from partners and CPS families, we source recipe ideas that reflect the cultural makeup of our city. Food and Nutrition Services craft a version of the recipe that can be made in the large quantities needed for school meals. Together, we offer taste tests during lunch periods, getting feedback from students, teachers and administration. If the new recipe is well liked, it makes it onto the regular school menu!
Try some family-sized recipes from our International Flavors Program.
Mass Farm to School & Harvest of the Month
CPS Food and Nutrition Services has a strong commitment to sourcing food for school meals from local farms. This supports our local food economy and brings the freshest produce to our cafeterias. The HEAL team promotes this work with Harvest of the Month newsletters. Harvest of the Month is a program of the Massachusetts Farm to School organization, “encourage(ing) healthy choices by increasing students’ exposure to seasonal foods while also supporting local farmers and building excitement about school meals.” Each month we celebrate a different seasonal, MA-grown food which you can also find on the Cambridge public schools menu. Our newsletters contain fun facts, lessons for teachers, nutrition facts, recipes, book suggestions and so much more!
Snack of the Week & Recipe of the Week
Based on the Harvest of the Month highlighted food(s), we promote tasty snacks and recipes each month! You can find the Snack of the Week in the CPS newsletters, and each Recipe of the Week on our social media.
