Public Health Updates as of September 2, 2026

To keep the community updated on public health developments, the Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) will provide regular updates on its website and in a dedicated space in the city’s daily email. Look for a recap of important public health information every other week.

Flu and COVID-19 Vaccines

Set a reminder: Fall is the ideal time to get your flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Plus It’s safe to get them at the same time, making it easy to schedule. CPHD is currently planning our fall vaccine clinics so stay tuned for more details. 

Recovery Month

September marks Recovery Month, affirming that recovery from substance use and mental health challenges is possible. Learn more about Recovery Month events happening in Cambridge. 

West Nile Virus Update

In August, there were five human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) reported in MA. Two are from Suffolk County and three are from Middlesex County. Cambridge’s WNV risk level remains high. CPHD recommends that residents continue to take measures that prevent mosquito bites, especially since WNV risk can often continue through the middle of fall in Cambridge. Measures include using mosquito repellent, wearing long sleeves and socks when outdoors, and draining standing water. Learn more at CPHD’s website. 

Food Recall

Halloween Chocolatey Eyeballs are being recalled because they contain undeclared milk. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. 

Measles

On August 25, the Pennsylvania Department of Health confirmed two measles-associated death. These are the first deaths related to measles with Pennsylvania in 35 years. Measles cases continue to rise in the US. Experts expect that the US will soon lose its elimination status, the recognition by the World Health Organization that measles is no longer transmitted regularly within a country. The best way to be protected against measles is to be fully vaccinated.
