New COVID-19 Booster Recommended for Children age 5 and Older

A new, updated COVID-19 booster is available that protects against Omicron variants and is very good at preventing serious illness. The new booster is now approved for children age 5 and older. Children (and adults!) can get this booster if it has been at least 2 months since their last COVID-19 vaccine dose (initial vaccines or booster).

The new booster is called a bivalent booster because it protects against several strains of COVID-19. The bivalent booster was made to protect against the COVID strains that are predicted to circulate heavily this fall and winter. The best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family from illness caused by COVID-19 is to get the bivalent booster.

The Cambridge Public Health Department is hosting COVID-19 and Flu Vaccine Clinics in many locations across the city. See the schedule below, our Get Vaccinated page, or our print-friendly flyer.

Appointments are encouraged. Walk-ins are also welcome. To sign up for an appointment, go to registration website.

COVID-19 boosters and flu shots are also available at most local pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Osco, and Inman Pharmacy). Although appointments for the bivalent booster for children age 5 – 11 may be limited at pharmacies at this time, the boosters are expected to be widely available soon. You can also search for locations at the state’s website for vaccine locations.
