Tuberculosis (TB) Program

The Cambridge Tuberculosis Program is based at the Schipellite Chest Center in the medical specialties clinic on the Cambridge Hospital campus of Cambridge Health Alliance. The TB program serves Cambridge and surrounding communities.

TB program staff include three physicians and five Cambridge Public Health Department nurses. Services include treatment, prevention, education, and case management of tuberculosis.

Patients seen at the Schipellite Chest Center are treated regardless of ability to pay. No cost are incurred by patients—this includes patients without health insurance, as well as specific treatments not covered by some health insurance plans.

Testing & Treatment Services

Services offered at the Schipellite Chest Center include:

  • Evaluation of patients who have a positive skin test for TB.
  • Treatment of patients with latent TB infection.
  • Treatment of patients with active TB disease.
  • X-rays, lab tests, medications, and office visits.

If you are a physician referring a patient for TB services, please include the date and size in millimeters of the patient’s positive TB skin test.

Only individuals at risk for TB are recommended for testing. The TB program does not provide routine testing for employment purposes.

People should be tested for TB if they*:

  • Have been exposed to someone with active TB.
  • Immigrated to the U.S. from regions with high rates of TB. These regions include countries in Africa, Asia except Japan, Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.
  • Have worked or lived in a homeless shelter, prison or jail, or drug treatment center.
  • Have a history of substance abuse in the past year.
  • Are over age 70.
