Public Health Updates as of September 16, 2026

To keep the community updated on public health developments, the Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) will provide regular updates on its website and in a dedicated space in the city’s daily email. Look for a recap of important public health information every other week.

Respiratory Virus Season

We’re entering respiratory virus season. COVID-19 numbers are on the rise, and flu is likely right around the corner. Below are helpful reminders to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. 

Get Vaccinated

It’s time to get flu and COVID-19 vaccines! Everyone 6 months and older is eligible for both vaccines. These vaccines can help prevent serious illness and are especially important for people in high risk groups, including young children, adults aged 65 and over, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those who are immunocompromised. 

Flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available at most pharmacies and doctor’s offices. Below are the dates and locations for the Cambridge Public Health Department public vaccine clinics in October. Registration details will be available soon.

• October 21, Reservoir Church
• October 28, Community Art Center
• October 30, Cambridge Community Center

If You Are Sick

• If you have symptoms of a respiratory virus, such as a fever, sore throat, cough, or a runny or stuffy nose, you should stay home and stay away from others in your household. Wash your hands often and cover your coughs and sneezes. When you resume normal activities, wear a mask around others. 
• If you’re in a high risk group, consider taking a COVID-19 and flu test. Early treatment can help prevent serious illness.

Mosquitos Still a Threat

Despite the chill in the air, the risk level of the mosquito-borne disease West Nile virus (WNV) in Middlesex County remains high with another human case of WNV reported this week. WNV remains a threat until the first hard frost, which typically does not arrive until late October/early November. Residents are advised to use insect repellent, clear their yards of standing water, and repair damaged window screens. Learn more. 

Food Recall

Whole Foods is recalling Fromagerie Coop de Mean Cabricharme cheese because it contains an egg white protein that is not listed on the product label. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to eggs run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this cheese.
