Public Health Updates as of June 24, 2026
To keep the community updated on public health developments, the Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) will provide regular updates on its website and in a dedicated space in the city’s daily email. Look for a recap of important public health information every other week.
Swim Safety
With summer here and the outdoor public pools now being open, CPHD wants to remind everyone about the importance of water and swim safety. Drowning is a leading cause of death among young children, nationally and in Massachusetts. Drowning can happen in mere seconds and is often silent. While children are at highest risk, anyone can drown. View our swim safety guidance for life-saving swim safety tips.
Lightning Safety Awareness Week
June 21 through 27 is Lightning Safety Awareness Week. The observance helps bring attention to the dangers of lightning. The National Weather Service states that since the start of this observance in 2001, lightning fatalities have dropped from 55 to less than 30 a year. If you can hear thunder, you are likely within striking distance of the storm. Just remember, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”
