Public Health Updates as of July 8, 2026

To keep the community updated on public health developments, the Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) will provide regular updates on its website and in a dedicated space in the city’s daily email. Look for a recap of important public health information every other week.

Powassan Virus

As of June 30, there have been 15 human cases of Powassan virus disease diagnosed in the USA in 2026. Of the 15 cases, 8 are in Massachusetts with 1 being in Middlesex County. Powassan virus is spread by the bite of an infected tick. Although Powassan disease is uncommon, reported cases have been increasing in recent years. Protect yourself and loved ones from tick bites by doing tick checks daily (including pets that spend time outside), using repellents, showering after being outdoors, and drying outdoor clothing on high heat for 10 minutes to kill any ticks residing on the clothes. More information can be found on CPHD’s website.

Be Prepared for Hurricanes

To encourage residents to prepare for tropical storms and hurricanes, Governor Healey has proclaimed July 5 to July 11, as “Hurricane Preparedness Week” in Massachusetts. Learn more about being prepared for hurricanes at the state’s website.
