Mission & Responsibilities

The mission of the Cambridge Public Health Department is to improve the quality of life for all who live, learn, work, and play in the city by preventing illness and injury; encouraging healthy behaviors; and ensuring safe and healthy environments.

The Cambridge Public Health Department upholds the national standards for local public health departments, known as the 10 Essential Public Health Services. These standards were developed within nationally recognized frameworks, and with input from public health professionals and elected officials from across the country. The standards were updated in 2020. The revised version is intended to bring the framework in line with current and future public health practice.

The 10 Essential Public Health Services provide a framework for public health to protect and promote the health of all people in all communities.
