Public Health Updates as of May 6, 2026

To keep the community updated on public health developments, the Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) will provide regular updates on its website and in a dedicated space in the city’s daily email. Look for a recap of important public health information every other week.

Tick Bites on the Rise

Visits to the emergency department for tick bites are up significantly in New England this year, per the CDC. While Cambridge data for 2026 so far is not higher than average, individual case reporting is often delayed. Residents are urged to take precautionary measures to prevent tick bites. More information can be found at: Tick-borne Diseases – Cambridge Public Health Department

Salmonella and Backyard Poultry

Public health officials in several states are investigating an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses linked to contact with backyard poultry. Hen keepers are reminded to always take steps to stay healthy around your flock by washing hands, supervising children around poultry, and handling eggs safely. Visit the CDC website for more information.

National Nurses Week

National Nurses Week 2026 runs from May 6 to May 12, honoring the contributions of the nearly 5 million nurses in the US. The week is anchored on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing. CPHD wishes to acknowledge the many contributions of our dedicated Public Health Nurses and School Health Nurses. We appreciate you and thank you for your work to keep community members and CPS families healthy and safe!
