Stop & Shop Recalls Fresh Ground Beef and Ground Beef Patties Due to Possible E. coli Contamination

November 6, 2007

Stop & Shop Supermarket Companies has recalled approximately 63,000 pounds of its store-brand fresh ground beef and ground beef patties due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

Consumers and food service providers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for Stop & Shop brand fresh ground beef and ground beef patties with “use” or freeze by” dates of Oct. 19, Oct. 31, and Nov.  3.  These products should be discarded or returned to Stop & Shop for a full refund.

This is part of a larger nationwide recall by Cargill Meat Solutions, a supplier of Stop & Shop fresh ground beef and ground beef patties. On Nov. 3, Cargill recalled more than 1 million pounds of ground beef because of possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7 at its plant in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. The beef had been distributed to supermarkets in Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Stop & Shop reported that it immediately removed all affected products from its shelves upon being notified about the recall on Nov 3.  To date, no illnesses have been associated with the contaminated beef.

PriceRite supermarkets, which have stores in Massachusetts, were also impacted by the recall.

Cargill learned of the possibility of contamination after the U.S. Department of Agriculture returned a confirmed positive on a sample of product produced on Oct. 8, 2007.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration.  While most people infected with E. coli O157:H7 recover without treatment within 5 to 10 days, a small percentage develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, a life-threatening condition. Those at greatest risk for this syndrome are young children under 5 and seniors.
