Cambridge Flu Clinics On Schedule

November 1, 2006

The Cambridge Public Health Department, along with many local boards of health and visiting nurses associations in Massachusetts, have not received most of their allocated doses of state-supplied flu vaccine due to shipping delays from manufacturers.

To fill the gap, Cambridge Health Alliance has loaned the health department flu vaccine that will be administered at the health department's busiest clinics in early November.

"The fact that we're part of Cambridge Health Alliance means that hundreds of residents will be able to receive free flu shots in early November," said Louise Rice, RN, the health department’s director of public health nursing.

If shipping delays continue into mid-November, the Cambridge Public Health Department may have to reschedule some flu clinics for later in the month or early December.  At this time, however, the department has not cancelled or postponed any of its free flu clinics, which are scheduled from Nov. 1 through Nov. 17 at sites throughout the city.

"We expect there will be plenty of vaccine available this fall and winter," said Rice. "Last year, flu season continued into April, meaning that it’s not too late to get a flu shot in December or even January."

Because of possible delays later in November, information on the dates and times of the Cambridge flu clinics will be regularly updated on the Cambridge Public Health Department's recorded Flu Clinic Information Line, 617-665-3855, and on the department's flu website.
