Luigi's Variety Promote Healthier Fare

September 19, 2014

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Cambridge Public Health Department will celebrate the newest store in the Cambridge in Motion Healthy Market Program at a special ceremony on Sept. 26.  Luigi’s Variety, located on Cambridge Street, has rolled out healthy eating options as the program’s fourth participant.

The Cambridge in Motion Healthy Market Program is part of a Massachusetts Department of Public Health initiative that works with local convenience store owners to make healthy food and drink options available. By promoting healthy options,  local markets are helping make healthy choices easier for customers in Cambridge. Local partners include the Cambridge Public Health Department, the Community Development Department, and the Inspectional Services Department.

The official kickoff celebration will be held on Friday, September 26, 2014 at 12 noon, at Luigi’s Variety, located at 520 Cambridge Street.  Cambridge Mayor David P. Maher and Cambridge Chief Public Health Officer Claude-Alix Jacob will be performing a celebratory “apple-cutting.”

“Luigi’s Variety had a baseline amount of healthy products, including fruits and vegetables and now the store is increasing its inventory of healthy items,” said Josefine Wendel, coordinator for Cambridge in Motion and a health department nutritionist.

Wendel added that the program is actively recruiting more stores and expanding healthy selections in participating stores.

Luigi’s Variety owner Koko Mouradian said he joined the program because he cares about the health and well-being of his customers. “When I learned about the Healthy Market program I knew I wanted to participate,” he said. “It’s important that I offer healthy items in my store. I can see that my customers appreciate that we are continuing to expand on our healthy options.”

The store has created a special section that is clearly labeled and in a prominent location.
