Cambridge Barbershops Offer Blood Pressure Screenings for Men of Color

May is American Stroke Month

May 1, 2014

For men of color, a visit to the local barbershop is often about more than a haircut.

“Barbershops are places that men feel they can share information about themselves and not be judged,” said Albert Pless, Jr., program manager of the Men’s Health League in Cambridge. “Men trust their barbers and listen to their advice.”

For American Stroke Month this May, the Men’s Health League is hosting the sixth annual Cambridge Barbershop Tour on Saturday, May 3 from 12 noon to 3 p.m. at Nu Image Barbershop (98 River St.), Just the Way You Like It (156 Rindge Ave.), Troy Anthony’s Barbershop (1199 Cambridge St.), and In Style Barbershop (566 Cambridge St.).

Cambridge barbershop patrons will be offered a free blood pressure health screening and refreshments, and will receive information on eating healthy, staying physically fit, and reducing risk for stroke.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking are major risk factors for stroke. African-Americans have nearly twice the risk for a first-ever stroke than white Americans, and a much higher death rate from stroke, largely due to high blood pressure. Stroke is the No. 3 killer in Massachusetts.

For information on the Cambridge Barbershop Tour, contact Albert Pless at the Men’s Health League at 617-665-3830. For more information about stroke, visit the American Heart Association’s stroke prevention website, www.powertoendstroke.org.

The Men’s Health League, based at the Cambridge Public Health Department, is a comprehensive men’s wellness program that promotes routine screenings, fitness and a healthy diet, and regular visits to a physician. The goal of the Men’s Health League is to prevent cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, especially in men of color.
